要正确翻译政治经济材料中的习俗语,离不开对形象性的正确判断。不同文化对同一喻义有类似的形象表达:汉语中的“破釜沉舟”恰好对应英语中的“burn one’s boat”,二者不仅喻义相似,而且典故也类似,一个出自中国古代霸王项羽,一个出自西方恺撒大帝。但这种类似表达的情况毕竟是少数。由于存在中西文化差异,形象与喻义难以同时传达。中国人常说得“一贫如洗”对应英语中的“as poor as a churchmouse”, “水”和“教堂老鼠”的使用表达了不同的文化背景;再如“蟋蟀”在汉语中常表达哀婉与凄凉的情绪:“独申旦而不寂兮, 哀蟋蟀之宵征”, 而英语中“cricket”却象征温馨、快乐:“as merry as a cricket , fromthe stove there thrills the cricket’s song , in warmth increasing ever”。因此,对于政治、经济中的形象性表达是意译保留喻义,还是直译保留形象,应考虑到文化因素和读者心理,一要看所用形象在译文中是否造成误解或不解,二要看是否符合译文语境,当然,在喻体和本体一致的情况下,能直译尽量直译。直译与否应视情况而定。一般而言,有下列几种情况:
