美国电影院在放映正片之前恭候观众相继落座之际,通常会放该制片公司未来数周的新片预告。这种广告由影片几个精彩片段构成,谓之“sneak preview”(偷偷先瞄几眼),吊足观众的胃口。前几天承职务之便,碰巧有机会在公司内部刊物杀青前sneak preview梁莺那篇颇有沈复《浮生六记》之风的文言小品《童年记趣》,不禁莞尔,别有会心。赞叹之余,聊发思古之幽情,顺便谈谈译匠高手采用文言英译汉的几个范例:
1)钱钟书译的拜伦致情人(Byron to his mistress):
Everything is the same, but you are not here, and I still am. In separation the one who goes away suffers less than the one who stays behind.
此间百凡如故,我仍留而君已去耳。行行生别离,去者不如留者神伤之甚也。
“行行生别离”一句巧妙地借用了汉代古诗十九首中描写情侣惜别的“行行重行行,与君生别离”。古诗古译,平添几分古意古趣。
2)梁实秋所译西班牙国王拉曼三世(Abder Rhman III,公元十世纪)名言
I have now reigned about 50 years in victory and peace, beloved by my subjects, dreaded by enemies, respected by allies. Riches and honors, power and pleasures, have waited on my call, nor does my earthly blessing appear to have been wanting to felicity. In this situation, I have dilligently numbered the days of pure and genuine happiness, which have fallen to my lot: they amounted to 14.
我于胜利或和平之中统治国家约五十年,为臣民所爱戴,为敌人所畏惧,为盟邦所尊敬。财富与荣誉,权力与享受,呼之即来,人间福祉从不缺乏。在此境遇之中,我曾勤加计算,一生中纯粹真正快乐的幸福日子,总共十四天耳。
梁实秋老前辈著作等身,以一部《远东英汉大辞典》和四卷《梁实秋散文》(包括最脍炙人口的卷一,“雅舍谈吃”)身后在大陆风行,天下为之纸贵。老先生的毕生呕心沥血之作《莎士比亚全集》亦将在国内出版,我辈后学可以一了夙愿,将梁译与朱(生豪)译逐剧逐句进行比较,看看以忠实原著主张严谨直译的前者与推崇神似不拘原文的后者是否有高下之别。不过,我相信更有可能是两位高手各有所高,各擅胜场。
梁实秋译的莎翁全集虽然眼下还无缘拜读,但从这段译文中尽可以领略老先生的深厚功底。 “have waited on my call”译为呼之即来,“earthly blessing”译为人间福祉,选词之妙,管中窥豹,可见一斑。
3)年届九秩的海外华裔文字高手乔志高(George Kao,高克毅先生的笔名)在所著《言犹在耳》中提到《纽约先驱论坛报》一位体育专栏作家的名言:“In boxing, verily, it is more blessed to give than to receive”,遂译为:拳击之为道,甚矣哉,施比受更有福。
《礼记·杂记》云:文武之道,一张一弛。近代对联圣手方地山戏为:一文一武之谓道,此时此刻难为情。乔志高信手拈来的“拳击之为道,甚矣哉”令人击节。
4)杨自伍所译弗兰西斯.培根(Sir Francis Bacon)的散文《论自恋》
Narcissus is said to have been a young man of wonderful beauty, but intolerably proud, fastidious, and disdainful. Pleased with himself and despising all others, he led a solitary life in the woods and hunting grounds; with a few companions to whom he was all in all; followed also wherever he went by a nymph called Echo. Living thus, he came by chance one day to a clear fountain, and (being in the heat of noon) lay down by it; when beholding in the water his own image, he fell into such a study and then into such a rapturous admiration of himself, that he could not be drawn away from gazing at the shadowy picture, but remained rooted to the spot till sense left him; and at last he wan changed into the flower that bear his name ...
那喀索斯, 人称翩翩美少年,惟心性高傲,锱铢必较,蔑视一切,令人不堪。自我陶醉,目无余子,常年出没于林泉猎场,优游岁月,与世人不相往来;有俦侣二三,如鱼得水;行踪所至,仙女跬步不离,芳名厄科。一日偶至清泉一泓,时值晌午,天气炎热,遂卧躺泉边;俯观水中倒影,始而不觉凝神观照,继而自我恋慕,如痴如狂,谛视自家面貌若隐若现,良久不去;出神入定,有如树木扎根,直至感觉消失;终于变作水仙,名曰那喀索斯......
也许是职业习惯使然,我见到精彩的翻译作品,但凡有机会总希望能对照原文读一读,看看译匠们是如何施妙手使一段段洋文投胎转世借尸还魂,期翼从中汲取养份。近年来的优秀文学译作当推青岛林少华的《挪威的森林》,其语言生动晓畅猜想较之原文亦不遑多让(可惜我不懂日文,只能想当然耳)。好比上海电影译制片厂的毕克为《远山的呼唤》和《追捕》中硬汉高仓健配的音那样,连高仓健本人都钦佩赞赏有加。杨自伍主编、由上海外语教育出版社出版的《英语散文名篇欣赏》提供了英汉对照并附赏析文字,且译文大多为译坛高手,正合吾意。杨自伍连大学都没上过,全凭自学成才,中英文造诣都相当了得。为此书做序的是国内英美文学界翘楚陆谷孙教授,也就是我们每人案头那本大蓝皮《英汉大词典》的主编。
5) 朱生豪在抗战期间以短短数载时间神速译出莎士比亚全集,而且质量之高令人难以置信,堪称句句范文。只可惜天妒英才,甫届而立之年便匆匆辞世。对于莎翁全集中的有些诗文信札,朱生豪采用文言翻译,颇见大家功力。然则百密一疏,偶尔也露个把破绽。如《威尼斯商人》中富商安东尼奥为了帮助好友巴萨尼奥向才貌双全的富家嗣女鲍西娅求婚,以一旦违约不惜割胸前一磅肉为代价向犹太高利贷商人夏洛克借了三千块金币。结果由于商船遇到风暴以至无法如期偿还,割肉履约在即,修书一封给巴萨尼奥,毕命前期盼一晤:
Sweet Bassanio, my ships have all miscarried, my creditors grow cruel, my estate is very low, my bond to the Jew is forfeit; and since in paying it, it is impossible I should live, all debts are cleared between you and I, if I might but see you at my death. Notwithstanding, use your pleasure: if your love do not persuade you to come, let not my letter.
巴萨尼奥挚友如握:弟船只悉数遇难,债主煎迫,家业荡然。犹太人之约,业已愆期;履行罚则,殆无生望。足下前此欠弟债项,一切勾销,惟盼及弟未死之前,来相临视。或足下燕婉情浓,不忍遽别,则亦不复相强,此信置之可也。
这封信的译文同原文同样简洁,甚至读来更为铿锵。信达雅三要素中达雅二字固不待言,但信结尾的语气是否堪“信”,倒值得商榷。末句貌似轻描淡写,但却在一个“爱”字上做足文章,字面谈的是友情,行间指的是爱情,两厢比较,何情为上。莎翁原意强调字面:if your love do not persuade you to come, let not my letter persuade you either(倘若你我手足之情尚且无法说服你前来,那么也就别让我这封短笺让兄台为难了),显示出写信人的君子风度。朱生豪艺高胆大,索性撇开字面而拎出行间隐含之意:“足下燕婉情浓,不忍遽别,则亦不复相强,此信置之可也”(如果贤伉俪新婚燕尔,春宵千金,舍不得匆匆别离,则不必勉强,何妨将此信置之脑后)。可这样一来,写信人似乎在行激将法:恩公生死之际,你老兄是否重色轻友,就瞧着办吧!品一品这样的语气,安东尼奥原信中的侠义形象就多少打了点折扣。
由此可见,英文汉译采用文言可以是双刃剑:用得恰倒好处,自不愧神来之笔;有时无意中过犹不及,甚或弄巧成拙,便免不了让后学晚辈如我等戏评一二了。
